Trump Demands France Seal Borders Following Riots

President Trump told France to seal its borders Monday after a weekend of rioting left major cities in chaos. The unrest led to at least 2,400 arrests across the country, according to the New York Post. Trump posted on Truth Social that the migrants have taken over France and demanded they close the borders fast.
The violence began as a protest over education and high costs but quickly turned into a riot. Far-left groups and second-generation immigrant youths raided luxury stores in Paris, Marseille, and Lyon. Police in riot gear watched as fires burned through the streets on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2026.
French Leaders Respond to Chaos
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu ordered very limited and localized curfews to stop the fighting. He defended the police against claims that they lost control of the streets during the crisis. Lecornu noted that no one died on Saturday despite severe violence and extensive property damage.
On Sunday, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez tendered his resignation yet President Emmanuel Macron requested he remain in office. According to reports, President Emmanuel Macron required ongoing leadership over law enforcement given the present situation. Nuñez admitted that authorities obviously lost control in some of these major cities.
Macron Refuses to Accept Blame
President Macron refused to take accountability for the riots in his address to the nation on Sunday evening. He blamed extremists from far-left groups and criminals for the unrestrained violence across the country. The New York Post stated that President Emmanuel Macron did not recognize how mass migration contributed to the unrest.
During his address, President Emmanuel Macron questioned the public on how French people could treat France in such a manner. He distinguished between legitimate demonstrators and those who destroyed, vandalised, and looted public property. The president claimed protesters were right to worry about the cost of living but ignored the immigration impact.
Curfews and Resignations Follow
The port city of Marseille banned any protest or gathering from noon to 8 p.m. on Monday. Suspects involved in the riots came from this region, which hosts a significant community of North African immigrants. Officials stated that details on the curfews would be released later Monday to the public.
Nuñez told France Inter radio that he submitted his resignation because he is responsible for everything happening. He asserted that the genuine challenge lies in guaranteeing such events never recur going forward.
