Jonathan Schanzer, executive director of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, informed Fox News that the president must deliver a clear warning. Multiple fronts have seen the Chinese regime providing assistance to the Iranian government.

Schanzer detailed how Chinese aid helps Iran attack its neighbors. Such actions have enabled the Islamic Republic to assault all of its neighboring countries. He also pointed out the supply of dual-use chemicals for Iran’s missile program. According to reports, the precision of recent Iranian targeting suggests Chinese help as well.

The economic relationship keeps the Islamic Republic afloat while it disrupts global oil markets. Schanzer argued that these actions must stop. He added that the Chinese government shows no shame for its role. “When you look at what’s happening here, it’s pretty clear that the Chinese government is just not ashamed of this at all,” he said.

Strengthening the American Position

Other experts believe the Trump administration has built a stronger hand before this summit. Michael Lucci, founder of State Armor, told Breitbart News that the administration is engaged in unprecedented geopolitical maneuvering. He noted that President Trump recently signed a deal with Denmark and Greenland. This agreement ensures a permanent, dominant U.S. position in the Arctic.

Lucci emphasized that under Trump, NATO allies have been led to raise their defense expenditures. He also mentioned that the U.S. has deprived China of cheap oil from Venezuela and Iran. Mike Martin, a former senior national security official, said in a statement to Breitbart News that confronting China is central to the agenda.

By 2035, NATO members have agreed to raise defense spending to five percent of GDP as a concrete step. The Trump administration has also expanded security presence in the Arctic. While confronting CCP efforts to secure leverage, these actions seek to bolster domestic capabilities.

The meeting comes after a history of ups and downs between the two nations. Tariffs on Chinese goods recently neared 150 percent before a cooling off period. That pause followed a meeting in South Korea where Xi agreed to crack down on fentanyl exports. Approximately 488,000 Americans were killed by those exports during the last decade.

Schanzer emphasized the need for the U.S. to “bare his teeth” regarding Iranian support. He holds the view that the Chinese government faces a risk of escalation against the United States. A senior administration official stated to Fox News Digital that Trump and Xi had previously concurred that Iran must not acquire a nuclear weapon. They also agreed that the Strait of Hormuz should reopen without tolls.

Schanzer concluded by noting the broader competition at play. “I think the big thing in the background here is that we’re obviously watching great power competition between two of the world’s largest economies and largest militaries,” he said. The outcome of these talks will determine if China continues its support for Iran or shifts its focus.
