President Donald Trump is not launching social media attacks against Republicans who are breaking with his administration. This shift comes just six weeks before the midterm elections, a time when political unity matters most. The Washington Examiner reports that Trump has chosen to let these members of his own party distance themselves from his policies.

Several Republicans have publicly criticized the president on key issues like the war in Iran and immigration enforcement. Despite these public splits, Trump has not endorsed primary challenges or used derogatory nicknames against them.

Representative Don Bacon wrote an op-ed criticizing the deportation of nonviolent illegal immigrants. Bacon noted that this ought to concern any individual holding the view that enforcement must target genuine dangers to public safety.

Representative Maria Elvira Salazar released a campaign ad telling Trump directly, “Some of your immigration enforcement efforts have gone too far.” She warned that detaining nonviolent immigrants could hurt the party in the upcoming elections. In response to reporters, Trump remarked, “She got a little bit soft on the border” I understand that. I understand that. But I just don’t happen to be there.

This move comes nine days after the House rejected similar motions from Representative Al Green. The vote to shelve those earlier motions was 232-147 on September 15. Cohen frames his new resolution as a roadmap for Democrats if they regain the majority in January.

External polls show a difficult political environment for the president. On Monday, a fresh Reuters /Ipsos poll indicated Trump holds a 32% approval rating. Prominent allies like Steve Deace are warning that the fallout from the Iran war could drag down the GOP ticket.

Meanwhile, rapper Nicki Minaj is urging young voters to support Republican candidates in the upcoming midterms. She told Lara Trump on Saturday that young people should “vote red now.” Minaj characterized the president as “a very authentic person” and commended his unscripted style within the White House.

Senator Roger Wicker also voiced his displeasure with the recent visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping. Addressing the Senate, he said, “Quite frankly, had the White House asked me for advice, I would’ve suggested the president not invite Xi Jinping to Washington for such a lavish welcome” These internal debates highlight the high stakes facing the party as election day nears.
