Trump Reveals Why He Doubts Russia’s Plague Incident Is A Bioweapon

The United States sent a formal complaint to Russia on Wednesday. The request asks Moscow to share more details about a lab worker’s death. This worker died at a research center in Siberia. ABC News reports the State Department declared, “We have officially requested additional information from the Russian government,” while the complaint cautions that concealing such details violates international health rules.

The President’s Stance on the Threat

President Trump told reporters he does not think this is a bioweapon. He spoke on Wednesday during an Oval Office announcement. He added that Russian officials claim the situation is under control. “And if you listen to them, it’s under control,” Trump said of Russia.

Trump also noted that China and Russia are not saying much. He warned against jumping to conclusions too fast regarding the unknowns.

Despite his doubts, the President has a plan to speak directly with Vladimir Putin. “I have a call scheduled,” Trump told reporters early Tuesday evening. He promised this call would happen very soon. He also planned an announcement at the White House on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m.

Conflicting Reports on the Call

Not everyone agrees that the phone call is set. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov denied that any call had been set up. This creates a clear contradiction between the White House and the Kremlin. The Daily Wire reported that it remains unclear if the White House announcement relates to the call. Trump said he could share more intelligence details on Wednesday.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged caution on Tuesday. Rubio warned the public not to guess about the nature of the incident. “But I think it would be reckless at this moment, given the limited information we still have, to speculate about what this might or might not be or what this is or what this isn’t,” Rubio said.

The World Health Organization has also asked for answers. Head Tedros Ghebreyesus asked Russia for clarification concerning “media reports of a second employee with pneumonia of undetermined cause,” as the passing of the 28-year-old female staffer, Darya Shipilova, has ignited worldwide alarm. Widely considered the most virulent form of the disease is Pneumonic plague.

International Rules and Next Steps

International health rules require quick action from all nations. Countries must notify the World Health Organization within 24 hours under The 2005 International Health Regulations. Any event capable of becoming an international public health emergency falls under this rule. Pneumonic plague is listed as a “potential notifiable event” by these regulations.

On Monday, Trump stated the United States was “willing to help” Russia contain the plague. The State Department’s formal request on Wednesday marks a shift toward demanding transparency. The U.S. wants to know if Russia followed the 24-hour notification rule. The situation remains fluid as officials gather more data.
