Federal and city authorities executed 28 arrest warrants and 44 search warrants. The target was the drug networks on Skid Row.
Over 100 law enforcement vehicles rolled through the neighborhood. Officers arrested members of the “Main Street Crips” and the “Pueblo Bishop Bloods.”
Mayor Karen Bass approved the police to join the effort. Essayli gave her credit for that decision.
But he warned that others are trying to stop the police from doing their jobs.
He said some people want to disarm the LAPD. He called those people “lunatics.”
“Anyone who’s calling for disarming the police is on the side of the drug dealers that we arrested today, they’re lunatics,” Essayli said.
A Mayor Under Fire
Mayor Bass faces heat from her own party. Councilmember Nithya Raman is running against her for the mayoral seat.
Per RedState, Raman posted a video calling officials “fascist liars” before deleting it.
Bass’s campaign says the video targeted the mayor and LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell. Raman’s team says she meant ICE officers.
Raman told a reporter she wants a new police chief if she wins.
“I don’t know that people who are criticizing us were anywhere near there,” Essayli said about the critics.
He added that drug dealers keep people addicted and take their money.
“It’s very disappointing to me that we have to deal with that,” he said.
The operation ended with a clear message to the dealers.
“We are no longer going to have open-air drug markets in the United States, let alone on Skid Row,” Essayli said.
He said the drug dealers are the reason many homeless people suffer from psychosis.
