NFL to DHS: Take Down Dawkins Post

The NFL hasn’t taken kindly to the Department of Homeland Security using a montage of former Philadelphia Eagles star Brian Dawkins’ hard-hitting tackles hinting they are akin to federal agents’ treatment of immigrants.

In response, the NFL is asking the DHS to remove a social media video posted Sunday afternoon in response to a news alert from an account known for sharing baseless or misleading claims that read, “Huge migrant caravan headed towards the US southern border.”

The caption of “Our time has come” was with a montage of the former safety’s most violent hits set to Korn’s “Blind.” Dawkins chanted, “The time has come,” in the background.

ESPN reported Monday the NFL asked DHS to take down the video of the 2018 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee. It remained live as of 6 p.m. ET Monday.

Dawkins himself wrote in a text, “I have very respectfully not given permission.” He posted his own video featuring a similar message.

In a statement to Forbes, DHS spokesperson Chandler Rebel defended the post, stating, “DHS is playing lockdown defense at the border. We will use every Weapon at our disposal, from A to X, to keep Americans safe.” Here, he was making an apparent reference to Dawkins’ X-Men-inspired nickname — “Weapon X.”

This is not the first time President Donald Trump’s administration used football footage in a social media post. In March, the White House mixed highlights from NFL and college games with footage of U.S. strikes in Iran.
