President Donald Trump has taken credit for many things—including ending wars. Now, he is taking credit for saving marriages.
Trump spoke at a rally in Corinth, Mississippi, where he campaigned for Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, who is expected to defeat Democrat Scott Cole.
Trump has been campaigning to try to shore up support for struggling Republican incumbents. During Monday’s rally, Trump touted the gains the stock market has made since he assumed office for the second time.
“And since the election, the stock market has set 88 all-time record highs,” he said. “Think of that. That’s much less than two years. You know, we’re still, believe it or not, we’re still much less than two years. Nobody thought we could do this quickly. I didn’t even think we could do this quickly.”
He urged the Mississippi crowd to examine the performance of their 401(k) accounts, which have done so well men are thanking him for breathing life into their moribund marriages.
“But if you have any doubt, before you go and vote, pick up your 401(k)s and check it out. You see that you have made more money than you’ve ever made in your entire life, 60%, 65%, 58%,” Trump said. “People are telling me right now, ‘My wife is in love with me. She thinks I’m like a great investor. Sir, my wife finally loves me. She thinks I’m a genius. ‘Darling, you’re really good at this, aren’t you?’ Yes, darling. Here, we’re up 64%.” Right? They didn’t do a damn thing. I always talk about the policeman from New York, he said, “Oh, my wife. She always hated my financial ability and now she thinks I’m a genius.”
According to a SmartAsset survey, Mississippi residents have saved the least for retirement. The average household has just $35,000 in retirement savings. Only 36% have a 401(k).
