The promise was a fair election. The reality was a plan to trick voters. Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy just ordered a probe into a scheme that tried to steal votes by using a fake name. This isn’t about politics; it’s about the right to choose who leads us. A retired teacher named Dan J. Sullivan Jr. was placed on the ballot next to the real Senator Dan S. Sullivan. The goal was to make people vote for the wrong man.
A new report from the New York Times details how this happened. It says Democrat operatives worked to recruit candidates to “deliberately confuse voters and misdirect their votes.” Governor Dunleavy called this an “organized effort to manipulate Alaska’s elections.” He noted that the Alaska Division of Elections had already looked into these concerns in June. The new reporting “substantially supports the Division’s findings,” he said in a post on X.
A Plan to Confuse the Ballot
The scheme relied on two men with nearly identical names. One is the incumbent Republican Senator. The other is a retired teacher from a small fishing village. According to the New York Post, veteran operative Jerid Kurtz initiated contact with the teacher. Kurtz reportedly told Peltola aides that the teacher “hated Trump” and was willing to run “if it was going to help Mary.” The teacher, who describes himself as a moderate Republican, even has a magnet of a far-left revolutionary on his fridge.
In June, state officials tried to remove the teacher from the primary ballot. They found a “preponderance of the evidence” showed his name was chosen to confuse voters. The Alaska Supreme Court later let him stay on the ballot. Now, the stakes are much higher. Fox News states that Federal prosecutors are carrying out an “aggressive criminal investigation” regarding the incident.. Issuance of Grand jury subpoenas is anticipated shortly.
Denials and Dirty Tricks
When the story broke, the Peltola campaign denied any involvement. “The Alaskans for Mary campaign has no involvement with either Sullivan campaign,” the campaign said in a statement. They claimed their focus is on “fixing the rigged system in DC.” The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee also denied participating in the recruitment. Yet the New York Times found that Peltola’s team worked with people trying to recruit the namesake candidate. The report says the effort was much broader, aiming to dilute the incumbent’s support.
Senator Dan Sullivan called this a “scandal at the highest order.” He told Sean Hannity that Peltola has “nothing to run on” and that her team decided to cheat. “What’s remarkable here is that even today, she has not apologized,” the Senator added. He said voters are starting to realize they were tricked. The Department of Justice filed a lawsuit to delay certification if the results are too close to call.
Accountability Is the Only Answer
We cannot accept a system where your vote counts less because of a trick. The governor declared that Alaskans possess a “fundamental right to vote for the candidate they actually intend to support”. Deliberately tricking voters strikes at the heart of our democracy. If the law was broken, someone must pay. The evidence will determine what happens next, but the question remains: who authorized this plan?
It is not enough to say the system is rigged when you are losing. You must play by the rules when you are winning. The investigation is now underway, and the people of Alaska are watching.
