The Surprise Announcement
President Trump promised every adult U.S. citizen a $5,000 payout if Republicans win the House and Senate. This bold move was made at a recent GOP midterm convention in Dallas. Senate Majority Leader John Thune told reporters he knew nothing about the plan until the crowd heard it. He stated he heard about it as the public did last night. The promise was clear: If the Republicans win, you win with us and you get $5,000, Trump said, per RedState.
The Bill Comes Due
The price tag for this idea is staggering and could hit $1.2 trillion. Jessica Riedl, a fellow at the Brookings Institution, warned that the plan looks like a dangerous arms race. She told The New York Post that both parties compete to bribe voters with spending hikes the country cannot afford. She observed that Republicans and Democrats are engaged in a perilous arms race, driving budget deficits higher. The cost estimate comes directly from The New York Post reporting on the proposal.
Funding the Promise
Senator Bernie Moreno of Ohio plans to write a bill to make these checks official after the midterms. He claims the money will not come from taxpayer coffers but from structural tariffs on foreign goods. So, if you’re a company out there, anywhere in the world, you want to sell your products in America, you either make it here in the United States, or you pay a fee to enter our market, Moreno said, per Fox News. He maintains the dividend must be spent solely within the U.S. and would serve only here in the United States. However, critics argue this approach simply shifts the cost rather than eliminating it.
The Conservative Pushback
Not everyone in the party agrees that handing out cash is the right path. Rep. Chip Roy of Texas called the plan a mistake that encourages bad habits. He argued that dependency is evil and soul-sucking in all its forms, according to the Washington Examiner. Roy proposed the funds could instead nearly eliminate taxes for married parents with dependents over the coming decade. Marc Short, former chief of staff to Mike Pence, called the dividend nothing more than wealth redistribution. He added bluntly, We can’t outbid Democratic socialists, per the Washington Examiner.
The real test will be whether the bond market accepts this new debt load. Jessica Riedl warned that the only way to stop the deficit race is for the bond market to cut off borrowing. She said this may be starting right now with rising interest rates. Maya MacGuineas of the Committee for a Responsible Budget called the plan fiscally dangerous, economically backwards, and fundamentally unserious. She asked how anyone could think we need to borrow another $1.2 trillion to send everyone cash. The question remains: will the party of fiscal discipline actually pay the price for this promise?
