Elon Musk lost $33.5 billion in net worth on Wednesday as investors sold shares ahead of incoming Democratic majorities. The world’s wealthiest person saw his fortune drop 3.7 percent in just a single day. This sharp decline happened while the rest of the stock market rallied to record highs.
The Washington Examiner reported that investors dumped stock in his companies because they fear new congressional probes. Musk spent at least $445 million trying to help Republicans keep control of Congress. His bet on the election results failed, and the financial penalty arrived immediately.
The Price of Political Bets
Musk serves as chief executive officer and holds the largest stake in both Tesla and SpaceX. His businesses took a hit after already seeing losses in overnight trading. SpaceX’s total value dropped approximately 3.8 percent, whereas Tesla shares decreased by about 3.3 percent. These numbers come from Bloomberg’s billionaires index, which updates wealth data every evening.
The Washington Times noted that Musk spent hundreds of millions backing Republican candidates against Democrats. He was one of the architects of the Department of Government Efficiency. Now, that same department could become a target for oversight as Democrats gain power in Congress.
Democrats could launch investigations into Musk over his leadership of the efficiency department. They might also question his decisions regarding satellite communications in war-torn Ukraine. These investigations into firms viewed as aligned with President Donald Trump become more likely due to the blue wave.
Market Irony and Family Wallets
It is strange to see Musk’s wealth vanish while the broader market surged. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed with a gain of 1,570 points, representing a 3 percent rise. This was the best single day for the market since April 2025. The benchmark S&P 500 closed up nearly 1.6 percent in value.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite gained 1.44 percent in value on the same day. Oil prices also fell, with Brent crude down more than 8 percent to just over $95 a barrel. This shows how specific political fears can hurt one man while lifting the whole economy.
For American families, this proves that tying your wealth to one political outcome is risky.
