The FBI raided a Beverly Hills mansion as part of an active criminal investigation into former Rep. Eric Swalwell. Agents executed a search warrant at the property owned by billionaire Stephen Cloobeck, a major donor to the disgraced politician. No arrests were made during the operation, but the raid marks the latest step in a widening federal probe.
Law enforcement sources told the Washington Examiner that the home belongs to one of Swalwell’s donors and is tied to allegations of sexual misconduct. The FBI confirmed the action to the Los Angeles Times, stating simply, “We are executing a search warrant.” Spokesperson Lourdes Arocho added that court documents remain sealed and that “No arrests are planned.”
After agents confiscated Swalwell’s devices at San Francisco International Airport and examined his Washington, D.C. home in August, this search proceeds. The investigation centers on accusations from at least five women, including a former staffer, who allege sexual misconduct or rape. Swalwell resigned from Congress in April and dropped his bid for California governor after these claims surfaced.
Cloobeck Breaks Ties
Stephen Cloobeck previously allowed Swalwell to stay at his mansion and spent more than $1 million supporting his gubernatorial campaign. However, the billionaire cut ties with the former congressman once the allegations became public. In April, Cloobeck told the Daily Wire that he no longer associates with a man who exploits women, while still supporting women’s rights.
Cloobeck is also facing his own legal troubles, with prosecutors charging him with attempting to dissuade witnesses in a separate case involving his former fiancée. He has pleaded not guilty to those felony counts while denying the allegations against him. The raid on his property suggests federal investigators are looking into whether he played a role in the misconduct claims against Swalwell.
Recent White House documents also renewed scrutiny on Swalwell’s past relationship with Christine “Fang” Fang, a suspected Chinese intelligence operative. Records declassified on Monday reveal that Swalwell informed FBI agents of having “physical relations” with Fang on multiple occasions. Their last encounter occurred in March 2015, according to the files.
Swalwell Denies Claims
Swalwell’s attorney, Sara Azari, criticized the release of the records as a political move to punish a critic of the current administration. She informed the Washington Examiner that reopening the investigation years later as a tool for political retaliation is inappropriate. Despite this, the former congressman maintains his innocence regarding the sexual misconduct charges.
After serving 13 years in Congress, Swalwell resigned his seat and said, “I will fight the serious false allegations made against me.” He also acknowledged taking responsibility for mistakes he made, though he denied the specific accusations of rape and assault. The FBI continues to investigate the matter without public updates on potential charges.
