A new look at a 2009 marriage application shows Rep. Ilhan Omar crossed out her own last name twice. She first wrote Omar, then changed it to Elmi, before switching back to Omar on the form. This document has resurfaced as the Justice Department continues an investigation into whether she obtained citizenship through fraud.
A checkbox indicating the pair was neither blood-related nor adopted was also marked on the form. This detail matters because Elmi is widely known as her alleged brother. The New York Post obtained a certified copy of the Hennepin County government document. It reveals the revisions happened on February 12, 2009.
The Investigation Grows
Federal prosecutors recently referred to her as “Congresswoman Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar” in a court filing. This aligns with claims that Omar was born with the last name Elmi. A source familiar with the investigation told the New York Post that Omar is not the congresswoman’s “real” last name.
Federal agents scoured her Washington, D.C., home during a raid after the RedState report mentioned they sought DNA from her family in discarded trash. Sources indicate this evidence is considered critical to the ongoing probe. Complications arose in the scandal after Elmi described himself as a “gay man of the East African diaspora” within an August 2026 academic paper.
Questions From Critics
Scott W. Johnson, a retired Minneapolis attorney who has investigated these claims for a decade, told the New York Post “the whole thing is a red flag.” He added that “Questions should be asked. She’s never answered them.” Johnson served on the board of Alpha News, which first revealed the application in 2016.
Johnson described the marriage as a “fraudulent marriage, brazenly fraudulent” in his interview. He stated that “The whole thing was a joke.” The Daily Wire reports that Minnesota Republican State Rep. Kristin Robbins also raised concerns about Omar’s ties to individuals in a separate fraud scandal.
Robbins noted that the Justice Department “didn’t say she hadn’t committed a felony” regarding the marriage. They simply said the statute of limitations had run out. This point comes after a New York Times report said an Obama-era FBI probe found evidence of possible immigration fraud in 2016.
Why The Timeline Matters
The New York Times reported that federal investigators found evidence of fraud during a 2016 probe but did not file charges. By that moment, the five-year limit for filing a case had already expired. This makes claims that the current investigation is purely political retribution look weak.
Robbins told the Daily Wire that she has asked Omar to testify voluntarily dozens of times.
