The ‘Goober’ Warning
Senator John Kennedy told NBC Sunday that he might run for president in 2028 if a “bunch of goobers” enter the race. The 74-year-old Louisiana lawmaker made this surprising claim during an interview on Meet the Press with host Kristen Welker. He said he would consider a bid if he feels he can no longer be effective in the Senate. Kennedy warned that weak candidates could open the door for him to step in and save the party. He joked about the old song “Why not me?” while explaining his logic to the crowd.
Kennedy declined to name specific rivals but made his stance on Vice President JD Vance clear. He told the host, “I assume JD is going to run,” according to the Washington Examiner. He refused to speculate on why voters should choose him over the Vice President right now. He emphasized that he has not made a final decision yet. He noted that if a bunch of goobers run, he might think he could do a better job.
Focus on Midterms First
Despite the 2028 talk, Kennedy is currently traveling to boost Republican candidates in the upcoming midterms. He recently went to Ohio to support Senator Jon Husted against former Democrat Sherrod Brown. He also visited New Hampshire to campaign with former Senator John Sununu. Kennedy told Politico he plans to return to New Hampshire and head to Texas and Michigan soon. He insists his travel schedule is his own choice, not orders from party leaders. “I have my own political operation,” Kennedy said in the report. “I do it my way.”
While Kennedy focuses on these races, other GOP stars are already clashing over the future of the party. This week, Texas Senator Ted Cruz responded to Vice President JD Vance by labeling him “insecure.” Cruz spoke to Politico on Saturday after Vance suggested Cruz was already running for 2028. “In my experience, people engage in political bomb-throwing when they’re feeling insecure,” Cruz snapped at the Vice President. Cruz added that he will keep focusing on winning the next 30 days. He noted he even campaigned with Vance in Ohio when Vance ran for Senate.
Who Will Lead the GOP?
The fight for the 2028 nomination is heating up before the current midterms are even over. Traditionalists like Cruz want the party to return to free markets and fiscal restraint. Meanwhile, MAGA Republicans want to stay populist and avoid foreign entanglements. This split creates a messy field where someone like Kennedy might see an opening. He believes that if the field is weak, he has a duty to step up. His comments show that many in the party are already looking past the next election. The real test will be if these candidates actually drop out or stay in.
Kennedy’s warning about “goobers” is a direct shot at potential weak candidates who might split the vote. He knows that a divided field helps Democrats win. He is willing to run if he thinks he can beat them. This is a bold stance for a man who usually stays out of the spotlight. The party needs strong leaders, not just famous names. If the GOP sends a weak candidate, they will lose the country to the left. Kennedy is right to say he will act if others fail to step up. We need leaders who will fight for our families and our future.
