In Anchorage, a car crash left Democratic Senate candidate Mary Peltola and her family with minor injuries. The crash occurred while the group was driving to the Alaska Federation of Natives Annual Banquet, according to Fox News. Her campaign confirmed that upcoming stops in Fairbanks and Bethel will be rescheduled as she recovers.
Campaign manager Cheryl Bruce issued a statement confirming the family’s condition and the change in plans. “Mary and her family sustained minor injuries but are in good spirits,” Bruce said in a statement. She added that medical professionals advised Peltola to rest before returning to the campaign trail.
Rescheduled Events and Tour Delays
The accident forces a pause in the Alaska Always Tour just nine days before the midterm election. According to RedState, Peltola’s car was struck from behind before colliding with a third vehicle during the event. Events scheduled for Sunday and Monday in Fairbanks and Bethel are now moved to later in the week.
Campaign stops scheduled for Homer, Kenai, Seward, Juneau, Anchorage, and Palmer will proceed as originally intended. The campaign stated that an updated schedule will be released once Peltola is cleared to travel. Bruce noted that Peltola is eager to get back on the trail to speak with voters.
The Broader Senate Race Context
This accident creates a difficult situation in the close contest between Peltola and Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan. Nearly two decades ago, no Democrat represented Alaska in the Senate, a record Peltola aims to break. Both candidates are working to rally support from Alaska Native voters in this high-stakes contest.
The election also features a third candidate named Daniel J. Sullivan Jr., which has drawn sharp criticism from President Donald Trump. Trump wrote on Truth Social that the ballot is a “TOTAL DEMOCRAT SCAM meant to confuse the Voter.” He claimed the other candidate is only there because Democrats want to steal the election.
Legal Challenges and Voter Confusion
Trump has directed his administration to sue if the incumbent loses the race due to this ballot confusion. He argued that the ranked-choice system creates traps for voters who do not know the difference between the two Sullivans. The Alaska Division of Elections previously tried to remove the challenger from the ballot last summer.
Her campaign states she intends to challenge the rigged system and reduce expenses for working families. The crash delays her ability to deliver that message directly to Alaskans in two key regions.
