An Anne Arundel County judge ruled that Maryland lawmakers unlawfully placed a constitutional amendment on the November ballot. Judge Robert Thompson found they missed a strict statutory deadline for the measure. The court also ruled the ballot language was misleading to voters.

According to the Daily Wire, the amendment violated state law by addressing more than one subject. Maryland Democrats tried to remove standards like compactness from congressional districts. They pushed this through a special legislative session to clear the way for new maps. This follows a similar failed push by Virginia Democrats earlier this year.

Virginia’s Warning Was Ignored

Per the Daily Wire, Virginia lawmakers took their first vote after early voting had almost ended. More than 1.3 million Virginians had already cast ballots before the amendment was approved. Those voters could not judge their representatives on a measure that was not yet law. The proposal then went to voters with language claiming it would “restore fairness.”

The Virginia Supreme Court vacated that referendum in May. The court held that the General Assembly violated the state constitution. The U.S. Supreme Court later declined to change that result. Maryland officials did not get the memo about following the rules.

The Left Split From Within

This rule-breaking happened as the Democratic Party faced a deep internal split. Old-school Democrat Rahm Emanuel recently challenged the Democratic Socialists of America. He appeared on Fox News to give them advice on their direction.

Currently, the Democratic Party refuses to allow a takeover. He noted they believe in defunding the police and eliminating the Pentagon.

Emanuel told them to prove their support by running as a separate party. He said, “Put it on the ballot. Let’s go. Run, as a separate party.” This shows a clear divide between the party establishment and the socialist wing. One side wants to follow the law, while the other pushes for radical change.

Accountability Matters for Families

You cannot break the rules to rewrite the rules for your own gain. The courts have now said no to these attempts in both Virginia and Maryland. This protects the integrity of our election system from partisan manipulation.

The failure to follow the process shows a lack of respect for the voters. It also highlights a party that is losing its way on core principles. We must demand that leaders follow the same laws they ask us to obey.

The judge’s ruling stands as a concrete check on this power grab. Officials now face the deadline of the November ballot with a flawed measure. The question remains whether they will respect the court’s decision or try to fight it further.
