A Democratic congressional candidate in Texas has made comments suggesting that molesting children is “not necessarily rape.” This statement has resurfaced as Bobby Pulido fights for re-election in the state’s 15th Congressional District. The controversy centers on his past relationship with a former friend who is a convicted sex offender.
The Controversy in South Texas
Pulido represents a redrawn district stretching from the Rio Grande Valley to parts of Coastal Bend. He faces Republican incumbent Monica De La Cruz in a tight race for a third term. The Daily Signal reported that Pulido made the disturbing comments in an unearthed post on X. He wrote that child molestation is “abhorrent” but questioned if it always qualifies as rape or murder. He likened this to claiming white individuals ought to be barred from purchasing firearms since the majority of mass shooters are white.
Reports from The New York Post indicate Pulido bragged about getting his friend, Frankie Caballero, out of jail. Caballero later sexually assaulted an 8-year-old girl. Pulido’s campaign says he did not post bail or know the full extent of Caballero’s criminal history. The candidate did not respond to requests for comment when these reports broke in July.
Policy Stances and Voter Concerns
Despite the controversy, Pulido’s campaign focuses on border security and economic issues. His website states that securing borders requires avoiding the destruction of families and the local economy. He also supports establishing “more vetting hubs in Central America” for immigrants. Pulido advocates for a “more fair and reasonable path to legalization” for individuals seeking to enter the United States to contribute.
On education, the candidate opposes school vouchers. He argues that such measures redirect funds from our classrooms to private schools. He calls for increased funding for public schools instead. De La Cruz campaigns on reinstating the Remain in Mexico policy and ending catch and release. She also supports reimbursing farmers for damages caused by illegal immigrant traffic.
I have watched many races where personal character matters more than policy papers. A parent wants a leader who clearly understands the gravity of protecting children. The voters in this district must decide if past words disqualify a candidate from office. This is not just about politics; it is about the trust we place in our leaders.
The election in Virginia shows how local issues drive voters to the polls. Joe Thomas noted that “All politics are local” and national candidates must tap into that motivation. The same logic applies here in Texas. Families are looking for someone who shares their values on the most fundamental level. The money gap in Virginia shows how much is at stake, with $2.8 million flowing to one side of a single amendment.
