Democrats took control of the U.S. House and Senate on Tuesday. The Washington Times reported voters showed deep frustration over high prices and the Iran war. President Donald Trump faced the results and admitted his personal support did not help other Republicans. He spoke at a ceremony on Wednesday after the election results came in.
The Rallies and the Loss
Trump told reporters that his supporters loved him but did not love the other candidates. “If I were on the ballot, we would have won,” he said at the event. He noted the huge crowds at his gatherings. “You saw the people that were packed. Thousands and thousands of people at every rally,” he stated.
He explained that the passion at his events did not move to the ballot box. “But they just… You couldn’t transfer that love,” he told Fox News. “There was such love at those rallies. It was incredible. And, we weren’t able to transfer the love to candidates,” he added. This failure to connect the crowd to the party cost the GOP the election.
The Iran War Cost
Trump also addressed the war with Iran as a major reason for the loss. He agreed with Vice President JD Vance that the conflict hurt the party. “I think it’s largely true because it drove the gasoline up a little bit short term and probably that’s, probably it’s true,” he admitted. He felt the oil prices rose too much for voters to accept.
Despite the loss, he said he would make the same choice again. “But at the same time, if I had it to do again, I’d have to do it again, because long term, it’s the only answer,” he said. He argued that stopping Iran from getting a bomb was necessary. “You can’t let Iran have a nuclear war,” he insisted.
He explained his view on the risk of inaction. “You have to do it. You can’t let Iran have a nuclear weapon or everything that you see here someday might not exist,” he said. He felt he had no choice but to act. “You have no choice. I mean, I thought the oil would go up a lot more, and I did it on that basis,” he noted.
The Party’s Future
The National Review pointed out a deeper problem for the Republican Party. They suggest the group acts as if it depends on only one man. The outlet warns that a party focused on one leader will fail to elect others. This dynamic appeared clearly in the Tuesday results.
Trump did not seem worried about a political backlash from the loss. He remarked that Democrats might want to talk about issues soon. “So if we don’t like what they’re doing or they’ll… they’ve already called and they want to talk about things and that’s fine,” he remarked. He also downplayed the chance of impeachment efforts against him or his Cabinet. “I think it would,” he said regarding the low likelihood of such moves.
