President Trump urged France Monday to seal its borders after a weekend of rioting left at least 2,400 people arrested. He took to Truth Social to declare that the migrants have taken over France and demanded they close the borders fast.
The unrest began over education and living costs but quickly turned into widespread looting and arson in major cities like Paris and Marseille. Per the New York Post, far-left adherents and second-generation immigrant youths raided luxury stores and other businesses across the country.
Macron Rejects Resignation
French President Emmanuel Macron refused the resignation of Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez on Monday morning. Le Monde reports that Nuñez offered to step down on Sunday because his office showed a lack of foresight in deploying police to stop the violence.
In a statement, the Élysée Palace said Nuñez will stay to ensure continuity in law enforcement leadership during this crisis. Nuñez told France Inter radio that he submitted his resignation because he feels responsible for everything happening on the ground.
He admitted that police lost control in some major cities where hundreds of businesses were looted. Nuñez remarked that it is impossible to claim otherwise while hundreds of businesses have been looted and avoid looking shopkeepers in the eye.
Mayor Calls It Terrorism
Éric Ciotti, the Mayor of Nice, is calling for terror investigations into the riots and a ban on groups like Antifa. He told BFMTV that the unrest involves a mix of Islamists and drug traffickers that the far-left is coordinating.
Ciotti declared that France confronts a red fascism, a French Intifada, and a type of insurrection uniting Islamists, Antifa members, rioters, and looters with terrorist aims. He noted there are more Palestinian flags than French flags at these demonstrations.
The Mayor wants the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office to track down these organized structures attacking the Republic. He argued that institutions were targeted in Nice when rioters attempted to attack the town hall and police stations.
Numbers on the Ground
Violence spread to over 600 law enforcement officials and firefighters who were injured during the weekend chaos. On Saturday, as riots engulfed the nation, the French Ministry of the Interior reported 2,397 arrests.
