The fallout from a controversial comedy bit took a new turn when a late-night host chose not to walk it back — even after a violent incident rattled Washington.
According to the New York Post, Jimmy Kimmel returned to his show Monday night and addressed backlash over a joke he made about first lady Melania Trump just days before a shooting disrupted the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
Rather than distancing himself from the remark, Kimmel repeated it.
“This was like déjà vu for me today,” he said during his monologue on Jimmy Kimmel Live!.
The controversy stems from a parody segment Kimmel aired last Thursday, designed to mimic the traditional roast-style humor often delivered at the annual dinner.
“Our first lady, Melania, is here. Look at Melania, so beautiful. Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow,” Kimmel said during the original bit.
The line drew renewed scrutiny after a frightening scene unfolded at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner over the weekend.
Authorities say a gunman, identified as Cole Allen, forced his way into the Washington Hilton with the alleged intention of targeting members of the Trump administration.
The incident prompted chaos inside the venue, though officials said a Secret Service agent struck during the confrontation is expected to recover.
In the aftermath, Melania Trump publicly criticized Kimmel, accusing him of engaging in “hateful and violent rhetoric.”
Kimmel pushed back during his show, arguing that his comments were part of a comedic routine and not connected to real-world events.
“There was no big reaction to it until this morning, when I faced yet another Twitter vomit storm and calls to fire me from our first lady,” he said.
He also clarified what he claimed was the intent behind the joke.
He insisted that the line was “about [Melania’s] age difference and the look of joy we see on her face” when she appears alongside her husband, President Donald Trump.
Kimmel described the segment as “a pretend roast,” maintaining that it was separate from the real-life violence that followed days later.
Still, the decision to repeat the joke after the incident has kept the controversy alive, drawing sharp reactions from both critics and supporters as debate continues over the role of political humor in a tense climate.
