Letter Shows the Federal Election Commission Found Issues With Contributions Made Out to Santos’ Campaign

WASHINGTON, DC - JANUARY 05: U.S. Rep.-elect George Santos (R-NY) (C) talks to Rep.-elect Tom Emmer (R-MN) (R) and Rep.-elect Andy Ogles (R-TN) in the House Chamber during the third day of elections for Speaker of the House at the U.S. Capitol Building on January 05, 2023 in Washington, DC. The House of Representatives is meeting to vote for the next Speaker after House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) failed to earn more than 218 votes on several ballots; the first time in 100 years that the Speaker was not elected on the first ballot. Contributions made out to Rep.-elect George Santos’ (R-N.Y.) campaign are coming into question by the Federal Election Commission, according to a letter.

CNN reported that a letter addressed to the New York Republican’s fundraising committee this week by the FEC asked them to clarify and provide additional information on some of the donors and about “apparent excessive” contributions to the campaign, the outlet explained.

The letter from the commission told Santos the information around three of his donors including, “Best Efforts/Best Efforts,” “NYCBS/MD” and “NYCBS/Self Employed” is “not acceptable.”

Additionally, the FEC said Santos’ campaign “must provide the missing information,” CNN reported.

In the event the campaign is unable to provide the missing information, the FEC requires detailed evidence of their best efforts to get it, per the report.

According to the FEC’s letter, the latest report on Santos’ fundraising “discloses one or more contributions which appear to exceed” federal contribution limits, the outlet explained.

The letter reportedly names three donors who each gave at least $25,000.

CNN pointed out candidates are permitted to receive, at the most, $5,800 from individuals during the time of an election cycle.

The letter from the commission also states that “the amounts disclosed … appear greater than the total amount the three (3) participant committees of the Joint Fundraising Committee can accept.”

Santos’ campaign has been asked to provide a response by Feb. 8.

He has made headlines recently for allegedly lying about his background.

Last week, it was reported that federal prosecutors are looking into Santos’ finances and the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office is investigating the lies he admitted to making up about his past.

“The numerous fabrications and inconsistencies associated with Congressman-elect Santos are nothing short of stunning,” Nassau County DA Anne Donnelly said in a statement.

She added, “The residents of Nassau County and other parts of the 3rd District must have an honest and accountable representative in Congress. No one is above the law and if a crime was committed in this county, we will prosecute it.”
