What it's about
The Gottmans argue that lasting relationships depend less on chemistry and more on structured, recurring conversations about the topics couples tend to avoid: trust, money, sex, family history, and conflict. Drawing on decades of relationship research from the Gottman Institute, they propose eight specific dates, each built around a set of questions, designed to surface differences before they calcify into resentment. The book matters because it converts abstract advice about communication into a concrete, repeatable practice couples can actually do.

What’s inside
- 1The Date That Isn't Small Talk1 min
Couples fail not because they lack love but because they avoid a specific set of conversations until conflict forces them out.
- 2Trust as a Verb1 min
Trust is not a fixed trait one partner has or lacks, but a pattern of behavior that must be actively demonstrated and named.
- 3Fighting Well Instead of Not Fighting1 min
Conflict is not a sign of relationship failure, and eliminating it is the wrong goal; the real skill is having disagreements without contempt.
- 4Money as a Story, Not Just a Budget1 min
Financial conflict is usually a disagreement about meaning and history, not arithmetic, so budgeting conversations that skip the meaning will keep failing.
- 5The Undiscussed Architecture of Family1 min
Unspoken assumptions about family roles, obligations, and traditions inherited from childhood will govern the relationship whether or not the couple ever examines them.
- 6Sex Without the Script1 min
Most couples never explicitly discuss sexual desire and boundaries because cultural scripts teach them to expect partners to intuit these things, and this silence causes more damage than any actual sexual incompatibility.
- 7Parenting Before There Are Children to Prove You Wrong1 min
Parenting philosophy should be discussed and partially aligned before children arrive, because waiting until a child exists to discover disagreement guarantees the disagreement happens under maximum stress.
- 8Growth, Spirituality, and Who You're Becoming1 min
Long-term compatibility depends less on shared current interests than on whether partners can support each other's individual growth without feeling threatened by it.
- 9Dreams as the Final, Ongoing Date1 min
A shared life requires an explicit, evolving agreement about a joint future, and treating this as settled once is a mistake, because life circumstances and individual dreams keep shifting.
