Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) is sharing his thoughts on former President Donald Trump’s indictment and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

On Tuesday, Romney issued a statement, saying he believes Trump’s “character and conduct make him unfit for office.”

However, he added, “I believe the New York prosecutor has stretched to reach felony criminal charges in order to fit a political agenda. No one is above the law, not even former presidents, but everyone is entitled to equal treatment under the law.”

Romney argued Bragg’s “overreach sets a dangerous precedent for criminalizing political opponents and damages the public’s faith in our justice system.”

The statement continued, “The charges and evidence will be duly considered and the outcome decided by a jury with an obligation to fulfill its responsibility with the utmost care and impartiality. The American voters will ultimately render their own judgment on the former President’s political future.”

Concluding his statement, Romney said, “Finally, it is also incumbent on all elected leaders to discourage violence and anger in response to this situation.”

Do you think Bragg is setting a dangerous precedent?

Trump is facing 34 counts of falsifying business records in the first degree, all considered felonies under New York law.

The charges were released Tuesday as Trump made his first appearance in court.

Trump later spoke out about the issue, saying, “I never thought anything like this could happen in America … the only crime that I have committed is to fearlessly defend our nation from those who seek to destroy it.”

He continued, “From the beginning, the Democrats spied on my campaign, remember that? They attacked me with an onslaught of fraudulent investigations. Russia, Russia, Russa. Ukraine, Ukraine, Ukraine. Impeachment hoax No. 1. Impeachment hoax No. 2. The illegal and unconstitutional raid on Mar-a-Lago.”

The former president later suggested the “justice system has become lawless. They’re using it now — in addition to everything else — to win elections … they came up with a new one … they’re looking at me through the Espionage Act … of 1917 where the penalty is death.”
