A prominent NFL reporter has stepped away from her role following a wave of scrutiny tied to photos that sparked widespread speculation.

According to Page Six, Dianna Russini announced her resignation from The Athletic in a letter addressed to executive editor Steven Ginsberg, saying she wanted to bring an end to what she described as a growing media frenzy.

“I have covered the NFL with professionalism and dedication throughout my career, and I stand behind every story I have ever published,” the letter reads.

Russini noted that her employer initially backed her after the images surfaced.

“When the Page Six item first appeared, The Athletic supported me unequivocally, expressed confidence in my work and pride in my journalism. For that I am grateful.”

But she said the situation quickly escalated beyond that initial response.

“In the days that followed, unfortunately, commentators in various media have engaged in self-feeding speculation that is simply unmoored from the facts,” Russini continued.

The controversy centers on photos taken at a luxury resort in Arizona showing Russini alongside Mike Vrabel, head coach of the New England Patriots.

According to reports, the two were seen spending time together at the hotel, including at a restaurant patio, a pool, and later on a private rooftop area.

Both Russini and Vrabel pushed back on any negative interpretations of the images.

“These photos show a completely innocent interaction and any suggestion otherwise is laughable. This doesn’t deserve any further response,” Vrabel said.

Russini similarly downplayed the situation.

“The photos don’t represent the group of six people who were hanging out during the day. Like most journalists in the NFL, reporters interact with sources away from stadiums and other venues.”

Despite those statements, the fallout continued.

Russini said the ongoing attention — and the internal review process at her workplace — played a role in her decision to leave.

“Moreover, this media frenzy is hurtling forward without regard for the review process The Athletic is trying to complete. It continues to escalate, fueled by repeated leaks, and I have no interest in submitting to a public inquiry that has already caused far more damage than I am willing to accept,” she wrote.

“Rather than allowing this to continue, I have decided to step aside now — before my current contract expires on June 30. I do so not because I accept the narrative that has been constructed around this episode, but because I refuse to lend it further oxygen or to let it define me or my career.”

Russini had worked at The Athletic since 2023 as a senior NFL insider.

Before her resignation, the outlet — owned by The New York Times — had sidelined her while reviewing the situation.

The investigation, according to reports, remains ongoing.
