Partial Government Shutdown Continues

A US flag flies on the US Capitol in Washington, DC, on January 31, 2026. The US government entered a partial shutdown on January 31 as a midnight funding deadline passed without Congress approving a 2026 budget, though disruption was expected to be limited with the House set to move early next week to ratify a Senate-backed deal. Members of the House of Representatives returned to work Monday as the partial government shutdown stretched into another day.

The recent partial shutdown started Saturday, per PBS.

The House GOP will have an uphill battle as they work to get the funding package accepted, as The Hill reported.

Democrats said they will not support the measure.

One of the biggest topics of contention is over what reforms to make to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other federal agencies.

This subject has been in the headlines after two U.S. citizens were fatally shot in Minneapolis by federal immigration officers.

Should Congress take action to end the partial government shutdown?

More than 10,000 Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) workers have been furloughed.

This leaves almost 14,000 air traffic controllers working without pay.

President Donald Trump said Monday he has only “signing time” on his schedule.

Congress has passed half this year’s funding bills, which will ensure several important federal agencies and programs will continue to operate through September. This includes nutrition assistance programs, per PBS.

Funding may lapse temporarily for the Pentagon and agencies such as the departments of Homeland Security and Transportation.

Essential functions will continue, but workers could go without pay. Some could be furloughed — like the FAA.
