Romney Calls GOP Officials Attending Trump Trial ‘Embarrassing’

WASHINGTON, DC - FEBRUARY 08: U.S. Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) arrives for a Senate Republican meeting at the U.S. Capitol on February 08, 2024 in Washington, DC. There’s one Republican who won’t be attending former President Donald Trump’s hush money trial — Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah).

The Republican senator from Utah thinks the many Republican leaders attending the trial to support Trump is “a little embarrassing,” USA Today reported.

“I think it’s a little demeaning to show up in front of a courthouse particularly one where we’re talking about an allegation of paying a porn star,” Romney told reporters Wednesday.

Trump faces 34 counts of falsifying documents to cover up payments made to porn star Stormy Daniels in exchange for her silence regarding an alleged sexual encounter between her and Trump.

Many of those showing support in the Manhattan courtroom are also in consideration to be Trump’s vice president.

The visitors include Sens Rick Scott (R-Fla.) and J.D. Vance (R-Ohio); Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.); House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.); North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy.

Romney has found this distasteful and embarrassing.

“Really very difficult to watch,” Romney said of the visits. “There is a level of dignity and decorum that you expect from people who are running for the highest station in the land, and going out and prostrating themselves in front of the public to try and apparently curry favor with the person whose our nominee, it’s a little embarrassing.”

Johnson asserted Tuesday that the trial was a means to an end — to keep the presumptive GOP nominee for president off the campaign trail.

“This is the fifth week that President Trump has been in court for this sham of a trial,” Johnson said.
