The U.S. military is preparing to send an additional 1,000 troops to the southern border with Mexico only days after President Donald Trump signed executive orders cracking down on illegal immigration.
According to Reuters, a U.S. official who spoke to the news outlet anonymously, said 1,000 active-duty military members will be sent to the border to help secure it, but did not add when this would be happening.
Newly appointed “Border Czar” Tom Homan, told CNN host Dana Bash Tuesday, that the administration is going to “stop the bleeding” on the southern border.
“We need to stop the bleeding, right?” Homan said, “We can keep barreling the water out of the boat, but we gotta plug those holes. So right now, it’s all about securing this nation, securing the border … right now, we’re gonna shut that border down and get a hold of this problem.”
Homan noted the situation seen on the southern border over the past four years, is the worst he has seen during his 35-year career.
“What’s happening on our border is the biggest national security vulnerability I’ve seen in my career, and I’ve done over 35-years of doing this,” Homan noted, “We need to take action and secure the border, and we’ll discuss the other polices down the road. But right now, it’s all about securing the border and saving lives.”
