House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) is announcing that Congressional Republicans will conduct their own investigation of the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
McCarthy announced his decision on Wednesday after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) rejected two of his picks to serve on a select committee looking into the riot.
“We will run our own investigation,” the Republican leader said during a news conference. “We have law enforcement, we have military, we have doctors, we have people from all walks of life.”
He continued, “You want to know the answer? The American people deserve that. They don’t deserve politics. They don’t deserve destroying the institution.”

He went on to claim Democrats are “playing politics” and that Republicans “want to get all the answers.”
Earlier this week, McCarthy announced five Republicans he had chosen to serve on the select committee to investigate the riot, as IJR reported.
However, on Wednesday, Pelosi said she would reject two of his choices, Reps. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Jim Banks (R-Ind.).
In a statement, the House speaker said she spoke to McCarthy about “the objections raised about Representatives Jim Banks and Jim Jordan and the impact their appointments may have on the integrity of the investigation.”
“I also informed him that I was prepared to appoint Representatives Rodney Davis, Kelly Armstrong, and Troy Nehls, and requested that he recommend two other Members,” she continued. “With respect for the integrity of the investigation, with an insistence on the truth and with concern about statements made and actions taken by these Members, I must reject the recommendations of Representatives Banks and Jordan to the Select Committee.”
