Eight-year-old Lillian Smart of Ruston, Louisiana died from a Naegleria fowleri brain infection believed to have been contracted while swimming in Lake Claiborne. Health officials note Naegleria fowleri infections are extremely rare and almost always fatal, with this case adding to Louisiana’s lethal history of the amoeba since 2011 as the community rallies in support.
