Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema was sworn in for a second five-year term after securing about 60% of the vote in August, in a ceremony that occurred amid post-election tensions and opposition arrests. Opposition leader Brian Mundubile and his running mate Makebi Zulu were detained and later charged with treason after security raids and despite a disputed election and closed courts for appeals.

Treason charges right after the ceremony feels less like justice and more like a message being sent to the opposition.
