California Gov. Gavin Newsom released four years of long-awaited tax returns Friday, ending weeks of criticism over why he had not followed through on his repeated pledge to disclose the records annually while in office.
According to The New York Post, the governor's office published more than 700 pages of filings covering tax years 2021 through 2024, revealing that Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom earned between $1.7 million and $2 million annually from 2022 through 2024.
The couple also paid roughly $500,000 each year in combined federal and state taxes, according to an Associated Press review.
The documents were released on the final day of a self-imposed deadline after Newsom's office previously promised they would become public before the end of the month.
Much of the family's income came from winery, restaurant and hospitality businesses that Newsom placed into a blind trust after taking office.
His gubernatorial salary of about $200,000 accounted for only a small share of the household's annual earnings.
The returns do not identify which individual businesses generated profits or losses.
The filings also showed that Siebel Newsom's production company, Girls Club Entertainment, posted losses in most years.
The couple donated between $40,000 and $65,000 annually to charitable causes and also reported donating thousands of dollars' worth of clothing and household items.
They also spent between $14,000 and $44,000 each year on childcare expenses for three of their four children.
Newsom's office did not release tax returns for 2025 because the couple requested a filing extension.
Officials said those returns are expected to be completed in October.
The disclosure comes as Newsom has acknowledged that he and his wife are subjects of a federal investigation, which he has described as politically motivated.
Reports have indicated one federal inquiry is examining Jennifer Siebel Newsom's taxes.
The governor has also criticized the Trump administration, accusing it of using the Justice Department to target a potential 2028 presidential candidate.
Earlier this month, Newsom's office insisted there was nothing unusual contained in the tax filings.
"They're unremarkable and entirely consistent with what Californians already know from his annual Form 700 disclosures," spokesperson Diana Crofts-Pelayo previously said. "The governor publicly released his tax returns while he was on the ballot and is happy to go above and beyond by releasing the remaining years as well."
Newsom has long argued elected officials should make their finances public.
During his successful 2018 campaign for governor, he released multiple years of tax returns dating back to 2011 and later signed a 2019 California law requiring gubernatorial candidates to disclose five years of federal Income tax returns before appearing on the state's primary ballot.
Despite that commitment, Newsom had not publicly released returns covering tax years after 2020 until Friday's disclosure.
