A Minnesota man previously spared Prison time in two serious criminal cases is now facing new charges after authorities say he kidnapped and assaulted a woman in a Bloomington hotel just months after securing an unusually lenient plea deal.

According to the New York Post, court documents obtained by Fox 9 state that 28-year-old Abdimahat Bille Mohamed was only free because Hennepin County prosecutors agreed in May to stay his Prison sentences in two earlier cases, including the horrific rape of a 15-year-old girl in 2017.

This allowed him to avoid incarceration despite separate allegations and DNA evidence linking him to multiple victims.

The latest incident occurred in September, when Mohamed allegedly met a woman on Snapchat and quickly became threatening.

After taking her phone, he told her, “You’re not going home,” according to the documents. He then allegedly transported her to a hotel, where she was held for several days before managing to escape and get help.

Critics questioned how someone with multiple prior cases was permitted to remain free despite clear risk indicators.

Elon Musk was among those reacting publicly, writing, “Repeat violent criminals must be imprisoned or they will keep harming innocent people.”

Mohamed’s earlier cases included allegations of violence and coercion, but in each instance he received probation and workhouse time — with credit for time already served — instead of incarceration.

Even a 14-month sentence issued in 2024 was stayed, meaning he did not have to serve it behind bars.

The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office defended the outcome, saying the charges and plea terms were the “available and appropriate ones to secure a felony conviction,” according to spokesperson Daniel Borgertpoepping.

Mohamed is currently being held without bail on the latest charges. His next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 31, according to the filings.
