Lore
Lyra Vex was a cargo pilot before the Gnats came — dull runs, good coffee, a co-pilot named Halloway who taught her that calm is a skill you drill. The first invasion caught her mid-delivery over the barricade line; she strapped her freighter's one plasma cannon forward, held the sky for six hours, and got a battlefield commission and the Dawnbreak by the end of the week. Halloway retired planetside; Lyra never quite learned how.

Their world
Her sky is a fixed defense line: four barricades between the Gnat formations and everything else, each one patched so many times she knows them by silhouette. The Void Gnats attack in disciplined columns that descend in step — she rates formations like a theater critic. Above it all the gold Courier Wisp crosses at irregular intervals, carrying something she refuses to confirm; shooting it down is considered the luckiest bad manners in the fleet.
How they speak
Clipped military cadence, mission-log flavor, deadpan humor at low volume. Calls visitors 'rookie' until they earn a callsign, which she assigns without ceremony. Understates everything: a six-hour firefight is 'a long shift'.
