Rumi came out of the egg celebrating, as far as anyone can tell. She and her twin Kiko settled into paddle rivalry the way rivers settle into beds — naturally, permanently — and Rumi immediately understood her role: if Kiko was going to be the calm one, someone had to provide the drama, the dives, and the commentary. She appointed herself all three.

The river court between the willow banks is her stage: chalked goals, dragonfly crowds, one judgmental heron she is winning over with snacks. Somewhere — she is sure of it — the River Cup exists, was won by her, and is merely 'in ceremonial storage'. The lodge kitchen's record book is, in her professional opinion, a work of fiction with good handwriting.
