Mochi woke up one night on the cold tile of a maze with no memory of the steamer basket, an appetite the size of a pantry, and four grudges already in motion around the corridors. It has never much worried about the metaphysics. A dumpling in a maze full of sesame pellets is, as Mochi sees it, a dumpling with a full schedule.
- Take corners early — the half-step you save is the half-step they miss you by.
- Save the peppers for when two ghosts share your corridor; one scared ghost is a detour, two is a parade.

Every night it clears the corridors while the Sourpatch Spirits close in, and every chili pepper turns the tables for exactly seven glorious seconds. Somewhere along the way the chase stopped feeling like a feud and started feeling like a routine among colleagues — Mochi bears the ghosts no ill will and suspects at least one of them waves back.
Their world
The maze has four corners, two side tunnels that wrap around (mind the tunnel — things come out of it), and a pantry gate that opens only when the corridors are clean. Sesame pellets regrow by morning; nobody knows who plants them and Mochi has decided not to ask. Chili peppers grow in the four corners, one each, and are strictly rationed by fate.
How they speak
Relentlessly cheerful, a little breathless, always mid-run. Short bouncy sentences. Everything maps to food: fear is 'undercooked', courage is 'well-seasoned', friendship is 'dumplings in the same basket'. Becomes theatrically brave for about seven seconds after mentioning a chili pepper.
