18 Moïse Assassination Suspects Extradited to US

Eighteen suspects accused of involvement in the 2021 assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse were transferred from Haiti to the United States on a military flight and are expected to face federal proceedings in Florida. U.S. prosecutors say the alleged conspiracy was organized partly from South Florida, where defendants helped recruit and equip former Colombian soldiers for the operation. The transfer follows the May convictions of four South Florida men who were found guilty of plotting to kill Moïse, who was fatally shot at his Port-au-Prince residence in July 2021. U.S. officials say 30 people have been indicted in connection with the killing and that the investigation remains ongoing. Haitian officials and human-rights advocates criticized the stalled domestic case, noting that Haiti’s proceedings have yet to produce a trial five years after the assassination.
