Adult Dead, Child Missing After Iowa Field Trip Accident

An adult died and a child remained missing after a reported accident during a fifth-grade School of the Wild field trip at Lake MacBride State Park near Iowa’s Coralville Reservoir spillway. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office responded around 12:10 p.m. Tuesday and recovered the adult from the water, pronouncing the person dead at the scene; the victims’ identities have not been released. Search efforts for the child continued through the evening, were suspended overnight and were expected to resume Wednesday morning. The Iowa City Community School District said counselors and additional support staff would assist Borlaug Elementary students and employees, and future School of the Wild trips were canceled or suspended.
