Adult Dead, Child Missing After Iowa Field Trip Accident
An adult was recovered from the water and pronounced dead at the scene after the Johnson County Sheriff's Office responded around 12:10 p.m. Tuesday to a report of subjects in the water at Lake MacBride State Park near the Coralville Reservoir spillway. A child remained missing. The accident took place during a Borlaug Elementary fifth-grade School of the Wild field trip at the MacBride Nature Recreation Area. Crews searched through the evening, suspended work overnight, and expected to resume Wednesday morning. Identities have not been released. Kristen Pederson of the Iowa City Community School District said, "Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and loved ones of those affected by this tragedy." The district said counselors and additional support personnel will be available at Borlaug Elementary to support students and staff and canceled School of the Wild field trips for the foreseeable future. No contested claims in the available coverage. The search for the child was expected to resume Wednesday morning.
