Alcaraz Seeks End to Late Grand Slam Matches

Carlos Alcaraz urged Grand Slam organizers to curb matches that run into the early morning after his five-set U.S. Open quarterfinal loss to Ben Shelton ended at 3:33 a.m., the latest finish in tournament history. He said the schedule leaves players with too little time to recover and can give their next opponents an advantage, while keeping fans from seeing matches in person or on television. The late start followed delays earlier in the day, and similar overnight finishes have occurred at other majors; Wimbledon, unlike the U.S. Open, French Open and Australian Open, has an 11 p.m. cutoff. USTA director Craig Tiley defended the scheduling and said he had not heard a workable alternative.
