Boeing Still Waiting on GE9X Seal Fix for 777X Certification

Boeing’s 777X program remains dependent on GE Aerospace resolving a cracked GE9X engine mid-seal, a component discovered during testing that must be redesigned and validated before final certification work can proceed. The issue has placed FAA approval for extended-range twin-engine operations flight tests on hold and paused the path toward certification and deliveries. GE Aerospace says it views the problem as an isolated design-tolerance issue rather than a systemic engine failure and remains confident the redesigned seal will not derail the planned first 777X delivery in 2027. Boeing has said it is still waiting for the supplier’s fix, underscoring the risk that a single engine component could further delay its largest commercial aircraft program.
