Bremen Exhibition Traces Dachshunds Through Art
A new exhibition at Kunsthalle Bremen, “The Dachshund: An Icon off the Leash,” traces the breed’s influence on art through works and dachshund-themed objects, including pieces by Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol and David Hockney. Museum director Christoph Grunenberg describes it as the first exhibition devoted specifically to dachshunds in art, presenting the dogs as muses and subjects across different styles and periods. One focus is Lump, Picasso’s dachshund, who appears in portraits and in the artist’s reinterpretations of “Las Meninas.” The exhibition also explores the breed’s distinctive shape and wider cultural significance, including its use as a political symbol. The show is on view through March 28, 2027, and the museum allows small dogs into designated galleries during certain hours.
