Cardinals Eye Veteran Starters for 2027

The Cardinals are expected to bolster their pitching as they build on a young roster and look toward 2027. Dustin May, who pitched for St. Louis before being traded to Milwaukee, is floated as a possible reunion candidate after a full but uneven season; his earlier Cardinals results and experience with the young rotation could make him a fit. Tyler Mahle is another proposed veteran option after posting a 3.99 ERA across 27 starts for San Francisco and Atlanta, including a strong stretch with the Braves, though his recent improvement may attract longer offers than St. Louis wants to make. The team also has internal bullpen help in prospect Gordon Rajcic, whose move from starting to relief helped him reach the majors, but an injury makes a full return more likely in 2028 than 2027.
