Catholic Leaders Plan 9/11 Anniversary Events

Catholic leaders are marking the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks by honoring the nearly 3,000 victims, first responders, service members and others who served amid the devastation. Recalling Pope John Paul II’s calls for unity, dialogue and reconciliation after the attacks, church leaders emphasize that evil and death should not have the final word. Accounts of clergy ministering at Ground Zero, including Franciscan Father Brian Jordan, highlight the pastoral care offered to victims, families and responders in the aftermath. A commemorative Mass at Washington’s Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception will remember those who died and renew commitments to justice and peace. Bishops also urge Americans to support survivors and grieving families while carrying forward the values of charity, human dignity, unity and hope.
