Costa Rica appoints Ruiz for 2030 World Cup
Costa Rica has appointed former captain Bryan Ruiz as head coach, tasking him with leading the national team’s effort to qualify for the 2030 World Cup after it missed the 2026 tournament. Ruiz earned the permanent role after interim victories over Nicaragua and Haiti helped keep Costa Rica in CONCACAF Nations League A. The appointment is his first permanent senior coaching job; he previously worked in club youth and assistant roles and captained Costa Rica at three consecutive World Cups before retiring in 2022. Former internationals Wilmer López and Christian Bolaños will join his coaching staff, alongside Wardy Alfaro. Ruiz is set to begin his tenure with away friendlies against Ecuador and Argentina.
