DOJ Charges 48 Across States Over Illegal Voting
The Justice Department has charged 16 noncitizens in North Carolina, New York and Idaho with alleged election offenses, including voting in federal elections and falsely claiming U.S. citizenship; the defendants include lawful permanent residents and one undocumented immigrant. Prosecutors say some cases involve voting across multiple election cycles, though the charges remain allegations. Separately, federal authorities arrested more than two dozen people in California in a sweep targeting alleged noncitizen voting, as the Trump administration intensifies enforcement ahead of the 2026 midterms and presses states for voter-registration data. The enforcement push has also sharpened a dispute with California over voter rolls, while available data indicates noncitizen voting is rare and has not been shown to change election outcomes.
