Dozens Warn Sudan Famine Risk, 19.5 Million Food-Insecure
The United States, United Kingdom, European governments and other partners warned that Sudan faces a growing risk of famine, with 19.5 million people experiencing acute food insecurity, including 5 million facing emergency levels. Without urgent action, severe acute malnutrition could affect more than 825,000 children, and the number of food-insecure areas is expected to double. The statement cited conflict, displacement, damaged infrastructure, disrupted food production and markets, blocked humanitarian aid, and drought linked to El Niño as drivers of the crisis. It called on the warring parties to remove barriers to aid, protect humanitarian workers, and allow safe access through front-line and cross-border routes, including air access into Darfur. The partners also urged increased international funding and called on financial and development institutions to direct programs toward the most urgent needs.
