Western films continue to earn recognition across eras: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly remains the highest-ranked Western on IMDb’s Top 250, while High Noon topped a recent ranking of the most suspenseful Westerns as a remake moves forward. Casting histories show how major roles might have turned out differently: Charles Bronson reportedly declined Tuco in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and also passed on the lead in The Shootist, which became John Wayne’s final screen performance after other stars declined it. Wayne reportedly rejected a role in Little Big Man because he viewed the film’s portrayal of the U.S. military as anti-American; the film later became a highly regarded Western.
