Ethiopia, Sudan expel diplomats amid tensions
Ethiopia expelled six Sudanese consular staff from Assosa and ordered the consulate closed, giving the staff 48 hours to leave. Sudan accused Ethiopia of allowing the Rapid Support Forces to launch drone attacks on Sudanese civilian infrastructure from Ethiopian territory, allegations Ethiopia denies; Ethiopia, in turn, accuses Sudan of supporting insurgents in Tigray, which Khartoum rejects. Sudan has lodged complaints with the United Nations Security Council and African Union, and officials said it retaliated by ordering Ethiopian consular staff in Gedaref to leave. The dispute adds to a series of diplomatic clashes between Ethiopia and neighboring countries and raises concern that Sudan’s civil war could fuel wider regional tensions.
