FCC Clears Amazon $11.5B Globalstar Deal for Satellite Spectrum

The FCC approved Amazon Leo’s acquisition of Globalstar, clearing a major regulatory hurdle for the roughly $11.5 billion deal. The transaction gives Amazon access to about 25 megahertz of licensed mobile-satellite spectrum in the L- and S-bands, along with Globalstar’s satellite assets and infrastructure. Amazon plans to use the spectrum to expand satellite connectivity, including direct-to-device services that could connect ordinary smartphones without specialized antennas. The FCC said the deal could increase competition, extend coverage in underserved areas, and strengthen emergency communications.
