Fed Governor Cook’s Lawyer Challenges Trump’s Removal Bid
Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook’s lawyer challenged the objectivity and fairness of a White House inquiry into allegations that she made false claims on mortgage applications, which Cook denies. He cited the inclusion of White House adviser Kevin Hassett, who had previously advocated her removal, and objected to unclear allegations and evidence procedures. Cook cannot attend the hearing scheduled for November 5 because of official Fed meetings in Europe; her lawyer said she could participate only after the Fed’s December 8–9 policy meeting. President Donald Trump has said he would pursue her removal if the committee recommends it, while a Supreme Court ruling bars him from firing her at will and underscores the need for procedural protections and the Fed’s independence.
