Trump Backs Ethics Deal to Advance Crypto Bill

President Donald Trump has agreed to most of a strengthened ethics package intended to advance the CLARITY Act, which would divide digital-asset oversight between the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and Securities and Exchange Commission. The revised measure would require federal officials, judges and their spouses with significant crypto interests to divest or use blind trusts, bar officials from issuing or sponsoring digital assets, and allow state attorneys general to enforce the law alongside the Justice Department. Republicans say the draft incorporates 126 Democratic-requested changes, including expanded consumer protections, limits on vertical integration and a stablecoin circuit breaker to prevent destabilizing deposit shifts from community banks. The bill faces opposition from Democrats and banks over ethics enforcement and stablecoin yield provisions and needs at least 60 Senate votes in Tuesday’s procedural vote to advance. Crypto markets rose on optimism about the compromise, while prediction-market odds of enactment this year increased to roughly 30%, though passage remains uncertain.
