France pledges 15,000 university places but delays overhaul until 2028
France’s government has promised major changes to its university admissions platform Parcoursup in 2027 and to replace it in 2028, responding to weeks of protests over education funding, admissions fairness and the rising cost of living. The unrest escalated into rioting and looting, while student groups have welcomed some concessions but say demonstrations should continue; labor unions have also called for nationwide protests. The replacement system has yet to be designed, and the 2028 deadline means the next government will be responsible for delivering a central promise.
